All of what you say is true. And yes, both the ITU and IEEE camps (FSAN and EFM, respectively) have established benchmarks for both present- and next get- distance objectives for PONs. But going back to the original articles on SARDANA and EPOD, improving on those distance constraints is one of, if not the primary, reason for their existence.

Similarly, and returning to my enterprise model for a moment, the pièce de résistance is a large building, campus or industrial park tract that is fed by fiber from a remote upstream location, rendering it totally devoid of all equipment rooms and telecom closets entirely. Years ago, if you recall, we (you and I) discussed the eventual in-line embedding of photonic systems and other network processing equipment inside the jackets of fiber-optic cables. Someday.
