Zinc find cheers Conroy

Irish prospector claims new zinc discovery but remains focused on gold.

Conroy Diamonds and Gold reports ‘extensive’ zinc traces to the south of its recent gold find in Armagh.

The Dublin-based company says it has found zinc-in-soil anomalies with values of up to 2,947 parts per million near the gold discovery at Clay Lake in its prospecting licence area in counties Monaghan and Armagh. AIM-quoted Conroy says average values in all the 1,500 samples taken so far are ‘well in excess of typical background values’.

The company insists its primary focus remains gold within Clay Lake and Clontibret areas of the ‘Longford-Down Massif’, spanning the Irish border, but says it now plans to follow up on base metal opportunities such as this. Friendly brokers suggest this zinc find could be of major significance for the company, whose chairman, Professor Richard Conroy, did, after all, in a previous incarnation, discover Ireland’s biggest-ever zinc deposit at Galmoy.

Since floating nine years ago at 25p, Conroy shares have disappointed on a perceived reluctance to follow up announced discoveries more vigorously. From a low of 1.88p, they have bounced up to 3.88p, valuing the company at £3.6 million and offering speculative potential.
