Eighty years ago, any woman whose husband could support her was expected to stay at home, have children, and manage the household. Women who worked were largely menials, who, when they did not work, were not counted in any statistic.

So at that time an unemployment rate of 25% meant a very large number of families with no income at all.

This is one area in which the "shadow" statistics do not seem very accurate.

We don't need to make the same mistake as Mr. Bernanke and imagine that we are facing conditions comparable to those in 1933.
