From what I understand, Generally the first 1-2 years have an extremely strong flow. And this flow is enough to pay for the drilling and the well.

After that there is a lower but still very significant baseline flow that can last as much as 15-20 years. And this is all gravy to the operator as the well was paid for by the first year or so's output.

The shale gas phenomenon is really very recent.
