Joe - Prior to about a year ago folks at my wife's work place
were getting a nice yearly return on their retirement monies -
fixed income stuuf, not flashy but safe. This didn't satisfy the
Chief Honcho who, with his discretionary money is something of
a market swinger. So he switched plans & now everyone there
(all totally ignorant of market machinations) are 100% in mutual
funds. They do have the option of going into a rip-off money market
fund, but Chief Honcho has barely made them aware of this.
A while back I had my wife switch entirely into said money market
fund. Yesterday I phoned her twice to let her know about the market.
On the second call the gal who answered said, "Are you calling with more bad news? This is my RETIREMENT!" The latter with high anxiety
in her voice. Sad. But IMHO it will become sadder. Multiply this
one example by millions.
