Food rationing continued so long in Britain because the British were so dependent on imports, on the order of 50 million tonnes of food a month BEFORE the war. The Jerries cut off supplies in 1940 and rationing began. The British were never self supporting in this regard. It took 10 years to rebuild a domestic economy (some other little wars interfered) to where the Brits could buy food again. Continental Europe, though far more devastated during the war, had the inherent ability to feed themselves once the war stopped, and recovered more quickly.

Hey, a very big chunk of that Marshall Plan went to the Brits. I wonder what they did with it ? Well let's ask the Brits themselves:
