A lot more hedge fund managers would have closed shop in the last down swing; however, the intervention, both direct, and indirect via providing access to govt 4 letter alphabet soup windows helped many to survive. Their computers are now playing with each other which we call the stock market. Another oppty to clean out excesses missed because the govt wants to keep the illusion of recovery in progress via uptrend in stock marketdespite deteriorating economy. This is unsustainable in the longer run or unhelpful to say the least. Using stock market uptrend as a means to show stability in the economy and investing returns comes at a very high risk not worth taking for most investors even if the uptrend survives for a while because when everything is said and done wall street would have rendered stock markets as a useless avenue for investing to most folks.
