Had a great time at Sam Houston Race Park yesterday. I took my Mom for her birthday. There were lots of kids there because they had Wiener Dog Races on the program. That has to be the dumbest race there is, but it does make me laugh. However, I think the greyhounds would look stupid, too, if they didn't have the mechanical rabbit leading the way. The poor little dachshunds come out the gate and look to see where their masters are. And wonder why all the crazy people on the rail are yelling at them.

We did have a horse get euthanized and a jockey ambulanced to the hospital in the seventh race. The horse broke his leg after he crossed the finish line. Fortunately, most of the kids didn't realize a horse was dying. Well, not until I told as many as I could. <VBG>

I watched a show on aging on PBS a while back. The conclusion was, basically, that the number 1 factor that determines who will live to a very old age (like 90-100) is genetics. For those few "lucky" people diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking habits made little difference.

The interviewed a bunch of "active" and healthy 100 year olds for the show and they all had lived very different lifestyles. The commonality was a family history of relatives living very long lives.

For the rest of us, our lifestyles make a huge difference or at least give us a fighting chance to outlive our ancestors.
