One of the stumbling blocks for Republicans and their Atwater-Rove model for mobilizing the base is that they do it based largely on demonizing everything and everyone that isn't a loyal member of their group. They only build momentum by tearing down the Evil Others. By definition, that makes it almost impossible for them to grow their support in diverse minority groups whether they are ethnic, social values, sexual orientation, whatever. You can't attack the people whose support you need in a changing society. Hence their damp squib Keystone Kops routine with Sotomayor. That was like watching a shotgun try to fire with wet ammo. Pffffffffffffffffffft. And they won't listen to anyone who tries to map a different route out of the wilderness for them. Just bang the drums for purity and bang 'em louder and louder.
