What I don't get is why republicans are not learning from this and doing the same for their party. A certain subset of the GOP do not view the political process as a contest, with rules of fairness, between opposing ideologies any longer. They feel they are engaged in a holy war, fighting for their beliefs and their way of life, and that any tactic giving them the upper hand is allowable. Things have been slowly heading this direction since Nixon, but have picked up considerable steam with Obama's election, for obvious reasons.
