The wars are national security. There was a reason to keep them separate. But yes, they were expensive in many ways We used to, as a Country, pay for our wars. Look at Korea...look at world war 2...the nation was asked to sacrifice financially for the national goal. Where did republicans (who used to lead that charge on fiscal responsibility in wartime) lose their grip? And dems voting for bills proposed by republicans who were in the majority of both houses of congress.....not much of an argument. Dems love spending. Where were the republicans? The fiscal conservatives? None to be found. Don't blame the democrats for being democrats.
