All modern conveyances are designed to have just enough strength for their intended use, to cut the costs of materials. I recently traded my Nissan Pathfinder for a minivan. The frame of the Pathfinder was about 5 times the cross section in the frame rails than the minivan, because the Pathfinder MIGHT go off-road - but the minivan NEVER will.

Besides the DC-3, the Boeing 747 no doubt is the safest airliner ever built.

But bach then, fuel prices as a cost factor could easily be ignored.
