It's becoming more obvious that it was a rigged election, rigged badly by the mullahs, who didn't seem to understand the Iranian public.

They called the election and announced the results WAY too early, before all of the tens of millions of hand filled-in ballots could have possibly been counted, but that wasn't their biggest mistake.

Their biggest mistake was the margin they gave Achmejinhidad. If they'd awarded him a slim victory, the public MIGHT have accepted it.

Even if they get the public to calm down, at least half the population will never accept the government in place.

I don't think they can smash it.

You know they can if the clerics let them. This morning they are talking about a maybe 'partial recount', lot of good that would do.

For years, the ayatollahs have kept up the pretense that Iran is a pseudo democracy. They don't want that image dramatically altered IMO. That's why they are prohibiting foreign journalists from witnessing future rallies. However, what that is doing is digging their hole deeper. I agree with Chris........the ayatollahs underestimated the will and the mood of the people and now they are trying to figure out a way of defusing the situation without cracking down. Its not likely the people will succeed this time but each time they rebel, the door opens just a little wider for true democracy.

There is a reason the signs are in English: "Where is my vote?" The Iranian people are playing to a world stage and the mullahs know it.

And it helps that Mousavi is related to the ruling ayatollah.
