As one of the annointed few who has actually seen a response or two from etrade (nothing like a trade, of course), I thought this thread would like a copy of the news flash on Etrade's front page:

__________________
Dear Investor,

On Monday, October 27th, the market was closed per NYSE Rule 80B at
2:36 pm EST and 3:31 pm EST . The Dow was down over 550 points. All
orders entered during open market hours yesterday were processed
appropriately.

Tuesday, October 28th, may be another fast-moving market. According to
NYSE rule 80B, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average declines 350
points from the previous day's close, trading in all stocks is halted
for 30 minutes. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average declines 550
points from the previous day's close, trading in all stocks is halted
for an hour. NASDAQ has no specific rules regarding these situations,
but generally follows the NYSE.

During a fast moving market, market makers will try to handle orders
as quickly as possible. However, as may always be the case, but is
particularly true in an active and volatile market, the prices at
which trades are executed may differ from prices you see quoted.
____________

I'm not exactly sure, but I think this is a license to screw you on any trade. :(

have etrade and pbs. no prob with pbs today and yest. could not get through etrade so far today. gonna close my etrade acct when it's over.

bought puts yest AM, were up big time this AM. tried to get online since 10 AM today to sell and couldn't. phone busy. now i see puts are back down again. can we hold etrade responsible for this legally? i'm sure they've got something in small print on their acct forms that exempts them from this.

Vol

All,
This is it. ETRADE is screwing all of us and today's inaccessibility
is the last straw. I am switching to another brokerage house, this is
absolutely ridiculous. I encourage everyone to call and complain about this flaky organization, how many times can they get away with this
disservice, this is our money that they have their hands on. Lately, its just gotten worse, even stupid market orders take a long time to
get confirmed and there is absolutely no accountability at all whatsoever.

Srikant.
