Calcium Carbide was 15 cents a pound when I was a kid...

grew up in a mining town so every hardware store had huge containers for miner lamps...

mix with water and it created massive pressure.....

since empty quart beer bottles were also plentiful, we made nasty little bombs with it....

and I think it gave off acetylene gas....so if you had fire close to the bang...you had a mini Molotov cocktail at the same time....

those were the daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays!
