Re: "I remember when Medicare Part D (the drug plan) was passed and how amazed I was that nobody, nobody seemed concerned about a brand new unfunded mandate for one trillion dollars. The republicans were as bad as the democrats."

Well, Hell....

If you can keep about a Trillion dollars in war costs officially "off the budget", who was gonna gripe about another Trillion over on the social-spending side?

(ESPECIALLY since the vast bulk of it was directed straight at Big Pharmaceutical Companies --- long one of the top GOP donating groups --- and foreign competition, and domestic bidding by Medicare to restrain the expenses were *specifically banned* by the legislation!)

Hell... it was Mardi Gras!

Re: "Somehow we were just supposed to grow out of all that debt...."

(Except that the CBO, and the GAO, and even the private econometrics firm hired by the Bush WH in 2001 to vet his proposed tax changes with an eye-out to 'assume' Laffer-Curve-style growth effects... ALL *unanimously* and in great detail explained to us how that would NOT HAPPEN unless Bush seriously slashed spending by mid-decade. Which he, tragically, never did....)

Party-on, Garth!
