"What's this supposed to mean? That people who have "punch clock" jobs haven't made it in life?"

Just tweaking harris. Way too heavy handedly, I admit. His stated opinion is that you don't have a real job unless you are punching a clock and being held accountable because of that.

"I remember Tom Clancy once saying that he doesn't think anyone is successful until he or she has made six figures."

I had a buddy in my tennis club tell me that he didn't think you could LIVE in S. Cal unless you made at least $100k. I pointed out to him that many more than half the people who lived there made much less than that. He said he couldn't understand how they did it. He was genuinely baffled.

I remember Tom Clancy once saying that he doesn't think anyone is successful until he or she has made six figures. It was an incredibly arrogant thing to say, especially since most of the people who made the weapons of war that he writes about will never make that much.

Depends on when he said it.

Today, "six figures" doesn't sound like much, but in 1977 I was glad to take a job as a programmer for 15K.
