I am a veteran of Africa. 8 malarias. 'All professions are conspiracies against the laity', wrote George Bernard Shaw

I know more about malaria than many doctors not specialized in tropical medicine.

Because I like to be alive I was very interested in the sickness.

Now if one guy arrives with malaria in a non-tropical country, most likely the doctors have to get the text book he used at school. :-) I know cases of malaria where the guy was discovered to have it after the autopsy!

Now playing on the ignorance of the non-tropical doctors are the pilots...

those docs down here they are not much good for many sicknesses that require high degree of specilization but they undestand everything about, malaria, diarrea, sore throats, bad nutrition much better than the OECD docs...

Was just at the medical school in Saint Martins which educates mostly US students. They have several studies on the sero conversion of their medical students to Dengue positive during their 5 quarter stay at the school and it is significant. Thus pilots have some increased risk of getting a life threating illness( the second time you get Dengue it can be fatal)Still I feel health care workers have a more dangerous job than Alaskan crabbers or pilots or police, with 2000 hepatic failure deaths a year from Hep B and Hep C contracted from patient care (Hep B deaths will die down over years due to the vaccine)
