Java will run on any system that has a VM that was written by someone who had to license the technology from Sun and must use a language that is 100% controlled by Sun and can't be enhanced or modified in any way because they'd get sued by Sun. That's why its proprietary.

Java in no way, shape or form marginalizes Windows. Microsoft Windows is currently the fastest, by far, platform for running Java applications. How does this diminish the value of Windows?
