As usual, you're being clueless. No modern president writes his own speeches, and in fact Obama's speechwriters are primarily inexperienced, ignorant kids.

While the speech was written by Peter Robinson, Reagan was advised numerous times in the vetting process to remove the phrase and in fact it WAS removed at several points during the draft. Reagan made the call in the limo, against the advice of his own chief of staff (Baker) and NSA (Powell).

It doesn't matter. Reagan ended the Cold War and that is not in dispute by reasonable people. And the speech was a critical part of it.

I doubt if there is another speech in the 20th century that was as courageous, thoughtful, and effective as this one.
