Jun 2009 13:43 GMT - DJ 3rd UPDATE: Germany's Merkel Urges Full Iran Vote Recount
(Adds comment from foreign minister)

BERLIN (AFP)--German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday called for a full recount of votes cast in Iran's disputed presidential election and for authorities to renounce violence against demonstrators.

"Germany stands by the people in Iran who want to exercise their right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly," Merkel said in a statement.

"I strongly urge the Iranian leadership to permit peaceful demonstrations, renounce the use of violence against demonstrators, release detained members of the opposition, permit free reporting by the media and conduct a recount of the ballots cast in the presidential election."

Merkel said that Iran, like other nations, must also "fully respect human and civil rights".

Vice-chancellor and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued a separate statement urging "all political forces to defuse the situation that has developed, otherwise the situation threatens to escalate further".

Addressing the Iranian leadership, Steinmeier said: "The violent actions against demonstrators are unacceptable, as well as the continued hindrance of free reporting."

Steinmeier called for a swift end to the dispute over the results of the vote.

"That includes systematically clearing up doubts about the proceedings and outcome of the election," he said.

Protesters hit the streets of German cities over the weekend in support of the anti-government protests in Iran.

In Berlin, hundreds of people joined a peaceful march through the upscale district of Charlottenburg and broadcast slogans via a mobile sound system, police said.

And in the northern city of Hamburg, some 2,100 people demonstrated peacefully Saturday against the crackdown on demonstrators in Iran and the contested outcome of the election.
