I think Buchanan makes interesting comments about how authoritarian regimes have no choice except to use force against their populations in order to survive. However, he is wrong in arguing against us taking a stance in support of the Iranian protesters.

He thinks if we say anything, those people will be considered to be our "agents" and "rent-a-mobs". Nonsense - the regime will end up spinning the story against them anyway. Stronger demands for their safety and expressions of moral support would help them.

I don't know if it's true that the US misled Hungarians in 1956 that we'd be "on their side". In any case, the Hungarians in '56 - as well as Georgians last year - should have had the simple basic understanding that superpowers will NOT start a nuclear world war over their grievances.

Concerns about being misunderstood should not stop us from expressing support for human rights and freedoms in other countries.
