Little Joe;

Okay, right back at you;

Well we have a great Military, but at extremely high cost and a great deal of waste.

Ya, I give you that one.

This is not a knock against police, who want to do a good job. It is a knock against a system that won't let them.

Want to trade with Mexico?

OK you win we do have nice libraries and as far as I know there is not a lot of waste.

Thanks

Both of these propositions are arguable in my mind.

But our food is safe and flying is by far the safest way to go. Something here is working.

And oh by the way most of us prefer Federal Express and UPS where available.

Where availiable. Sure you make the post office do all th rural remote places and give the cream to UPS - they should be able to do well. I don't think I have ever not gotten a piece of mail - surely never missed getting a bill! If I get a package they bring it down my driveway of a 1/4 mile. Could they do better in the post office itself? Sure - but my service is great.

We are unable to protect our borders. We have a tax code that is so complicated that the people who wrote it can't understand it, if they even bothered to read it, and, is grossly unfair and invasive of our privacy.

Yes I agree. Problem is we don't want to protect our borders. We want people to come up and work on the cheap and not have to provide them with health insurance. Want to close the border? Go after those who hire them it will stop to a trickle over night. The tax code? Yes abosolutely the most convoluted mess imaginable. But thats the fault of congress.

In Canada, the role of government in the public medicare system is basically an administrative one, collecting premiums and paying bills and setting fees. Doctors are private and most are registered as a limited company. Doctors are free to prescribe any medication they deem necessary, or prescribe any medical procedure.

Hospitals, like schools are government institutions. Capital expenditures are made by a governmental board, and highly paid administrators are responsible for the efficient running of the hospital. Not unlike private hospitals I would guess. Staff employed at the hospital all come under their administrative functions. Doctors do not. They have hospital privileges, and are assigned time slots for operations. Doctors incur no charges from the hospital for their activities there.

Its not perfect, and waste no doubt exists, as it does in any large corporation.

Its about people and rules. Some doctors may consider costs, others may not care. Some patients demand every right, others do not. Regardless of your status in life, the treatment is supposed to be equal. Except hockey players who go to the front of the line it seems. <g>

edit: I forgot to add that Doctors have their own offices elsewhere, or operate out of their own clinics, often with other doctors in partnership and employ nurses etc. privately. When you see a Doctor, you go to his private office.
