The century that the human race was most populous in (so far) was the 20th century, so any statistics comparing it with previous centuries should concentrate on per capita statistics.

Hard to refute that 20,000,000 dead really isn't that many. Not on a per capita basis.

By that logic 911 was nothing. A fly speck. Hardly worthy of mention in the fish wrapper weekly page 33, buried next to the bowling scores. Of course we can't use the same logic there because now were talking American dead.
