"hyperinflation" might be a bit strong of a word, but the period at the time of the Spanish conquest was known as the "Price Revolution": economypedia.com eh.net eh.net The fact is clear.. there was a limited amount of gold (although silver production had increased) prior to the Spanish discovery of the Americas and afterward there was a surplus of gold/silver which was spent by the Spaniards to finance their military and colonial aspirations.
