Two friends of my younger son didn't get into the NA this year, 650 plus SATs on each section, 3.7-8 GPA at a very tough private school, played sports, in various clubs, etc. One was even a legacy. Both are white. Other schools do the same thing. a girl in his school 550s each, decent gpa 3.4 or so. Got into every Ivy League school. She has red hair, blue eyes. But a spanish last name. Seems on her father side they were rich Spanards, who became big land owners in Cuba and left after Castro took over. She check off the box that said cuban. two girls with over 700s in each, 4.0 gpa (the school doesn't grade higher, even with AP courses). Didn't get into any of them.
