- Product weighs just 0.9 kg, 1/10th that of other models.

- Well suited to use while traveling, with high-end automobile A/V systems, as a multimedia educational tool and as an external DVD-ROM.

SEOUL, Korea - October 27, 1997 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has come out with a portable digital video disc-player (model name: P-Theater) that allows people on the move to enjoy high quality moving pictures and digital sound. The new product is 200mm long, 160mm wide and 55mm thick; it weighs just 0.9 kg, making it the world's smallest to date. These dimensions are just one-tenth the size of conventional DVD-players (420mm x 338mm x 120mm).

The P-Theater can be connected to a regular TV or projection TV for use in the home. Outside the home, it can be connected to a head mounted display (a device worn on the head like glasses that gives the sensation of looking at a 40" to 70" screen). When used with the head mounted display, the DVD-player is powered by lithium-ion batteries that provide up to two hours of viewing per charge.

The new product can play DVD titles as well as video CDs and regular CDs. It supports the conventional 4:3 width-to-height ratio screen, the 16:9 wide screen with definition of 544 horizontal lines or more, as well as 5.1 channel digital 3-D sound.

The super-small DVD-player will have a wide range of applications. People can use it while on long trips. It can supplement high-end automobile A/V systems. Libraries and schools can install it in their A/V rooms to be used as a multimedia educational tool or it can be employed as an external DVD-ROM unit for PCs.

Samsung Electronics invested 1 billion won (US$ 1.1 million)to develop the P-Theater prototype.
Commercialization is expected to be completed in the second half of next year.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$19 billion flagship company of the Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries.
The company develops, manufactures and markets consumer electronics, industrial electronics and semiconductor products. For more information please visit samsungelectronics.com.
