The problem is that this is something the 'values' voters hold near and dear. They will never give it up.

On the contrary, there has been a radical de-emphasis of values over the last 20-30 years. It is still a factor, but not nearly so much as it once was.

Bill Clinton was elected with the public knowing full well he was a philanderer. Gary Hart's career was ended by his "incident".

I'm not sure this nitwit governor would be out other than the fact that he was AWOL from his job. He might well have survived were it merely a case of canoodling with "another woman"; but having walked away from his job is unforgivable.

There are certainly instances where people have survived these incidents in the past. Republicans face an additional challenge, however, since they tend to run and get elected on morality and values, so when a R gets in the shit, it is more of a hypocritical action, whereas, Ds tend not to be elected on moral grounds to begin with, so there actually IS less hypocrisy when a D. behaves in this manner.

Still, the overall direction is one of looking past these events. The John Edwards situation was kind of an outlier, IMO, because of his wife's terminal illness.
