Hi Rick,

There are a few different ways IP telephony is developing right now. One is the Webphone, Internet Phone, NetMeeting etc arena. This arena isn't going to have high quality until the lines that go from your PC to the other side are high bandwidth lines. Your modem isn't very good for doing voice communication. This particular area will be helped with high numbers of people using things like cable modems.

The real way the IP telephony is going to change the way people communicate over the phone is by the presence of gateways. These gateways connect to high speed (T1 lines) on the telephone company (PSTN) side, and to high speed IP lines on the internet side. These gateways will be bought by corporations wanting to have one network in house, by ISPs that want to provide long-distance service to customers etc. The way it works is that you call the gateway, the gateway calls another gateway over the internet and the other gateway calls the local phone on the other side. Much cheaper, better use of bandwidth and a killer for the way the current things are done.

The quality of the products is getting better everyday. This field is for real.
