But, even if Gates wasn't bluffing and we have installed some capacity to protect Hawaii, it still doesn't mean we could do squat about a missile aimed in some other direction. Maybe in another 10 years. But not now. It helps to be realistic about what we can and cannot do. Gates was testifying before Congress you dolt. 10 years from now we'll be in much better shape, but we have numerous systems that can protect against anything NK may launch.

You have just made the argument for star wars defenses designed against rogue states and movements. I wonder if the Russians or Chinese would object to US defending Hawaii this way as opposed to Europe re: Iran missile capablity 10 year out.

"Actually wasnt it gates who said we could." Not quite. What he said is we could defend if he launched at Hawaii. That we might be able to do, or it could be that it was a calculated gamble. The missile in question has not had a great deal of success. Well, to be blunt, it failed both times it was tested. By making some educated guesses with what could be possible with a missile of that size, it might have the range to make it to Hawaii. But, it might not. And that is assuming it doesn't fail. I thought he was setting up ships with missiles around HW and maybe AK to let NK know if they fire on HW or AK, we will fire on NK.
