In certain controlled and very artificial tests, we have done that. But that has only been done with land based systems with a known target.

USA 133. Shot down by modified AEGIS SM3 -- from the water. Not exactly the same, but the target was at least as challenging and they had eight weeks to get the hardware/software ready to do it. Hardly controlled or artificial.

We cannot shoot down missiles moving at ICBM velocities with unknown targets. At least we have never done it. AEGIS is an red herring, it has been only shown to work on relatively low velocity targets.

If 17,500 mph were a "low-velocity target" I guess you'd be right.

And the problem set he is facing is less of a challenge than when he headed TAMU.

What a crock of shit. One of his predecessors is a close personal friend of mine and I'm pretty familiar with the challenges at TAMU. And I can assure you that the SecDef position is substantially more challenging than anything that happens there.

You are so FOS.

"Gates is a politician. While I trust him more than you, he makes promises he cannot fulfill. "

He makes promises he KNOWS he won't HAVE to fulfill. N. Korea has shown no ability to hit Hawaii. If, by some miracle, their multistage missile succeeds, will it have the warhead or accuracy to do anything - of COURSE not.

The missile can barely get there with NO payload. So, at best, it'll have a small conventional explosive warhead.
