"it seems that all my friends are getting joint replacements so I do not want to do chronic cardio."

you need to do some type of cardio exercise. to avoid joint problems i use a ecb semi recumbent cycle. It takes all the weight off your legs, hips, etc. it has a large seat, back support and raised legs for cycle, provides little to zero stress on your joints but meets your requirements to get your circulation going for twenty minutes.

as for pick up basketball, i lost a few friends with massive heart attacks playing pick up basketball. Both appeared to be in excellent shape. Besides you are not performing at a constant twenty minutes at a raised heart rate. i doubt this meets cardio exercise daily requirements.

weight lifting with watching our diets is ok if done in moderation, many injure themselves vs repair their bodies. you are putting stress on your joints and i have had doctors recommend stretching exercises and no weight training because of concern of stress on your joints and bones. I have gained strength, filled out my body like a twenty year old. i exercise with weights about twenty minutes max a day.. most days its only 15 minutes.

I make sure i ride the cycle for twenty minutes daily to get circulation moving throughout my body.. light weight lifting is second to cardio training. presently averaging 7 miles on cycle in twenty minutes. It's a real work out.

I had blood work done last week, no results yet, check up on Monday. weight now 185 from 235 and waist remains 36' vs 44".
