RE: "we are dreading their inevitable departure" I think a lot of dog lovers go through this. We become so attached to them & almost always outlive our precious pets. My wife has a particularly hard time with it. I do too, but when that time comes [dreading the inevitable] I try to focus on making the most of the time I do have left with them. It doesn't work 100%, but it helps me a lot. And it seems to help a bit with the grieving process too. You always wish you had more time, but you know you made the most of it when you did.
