JFShepard, I still remember learning about SS back in high school. I was told it was a government-sponsored retirement program, where the government takes a part of your paycheck and returns it to you when you retire. Later on I found out the truth about SS, that it's actually a Ponzi scheme by design. The vast majority of Americans don't know that, and that suits liberals just fine. Maybe if we taught our kids the truth about SS the same way we teach them the "truth" about Christopher Columbus, slavery, and other sins of the white man, we'll have a more informed American society. Genius. Read the FCKING report. From your own Obama administration. It clearly states that the "Unfunded Obligations through the infinite horizon" are $36.4 Trillion as of 1/1/09. That is PRESENT VALUE -- meaning, if you want to be able to meet anticipated benefits into perpetuity and given the anticipated cash that will be received, you need to deposit $36.4 Trillion on 1/1/09. If you don't, then this amount is guaranteed to grown annually. This is precisely the same accounting method that would be required of any private insurer. Don't argue with the freaking facts. If anything, your unwillingness to accept the facts on this subject suggest you are just as shocked and dismayed as everyone else is about it. The number is so fcking big it IS very hard to believe. But there it is. In black and white. Now get over it.
