We spent so little time on those things... I remember learning about the Trail of Tears and I didn't really come away thinking of it as much more than an isolated incident. And as far as slavery goes, we spent a bit of time on it, and we learned about the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, but not much else. A seriously whitewashed version of American history is taught in public schools.
