The global warming argument for a fuel tax doesnt help much in terms of politics. The left supported a fuel tax long before global warming became the center of the debate. If a fuel tax is going to get passed it needs to be framed in terms of national security. Both from a funding the bad guys type of perspective as well a balance of payments perspective. If the debate is framed in such a manner and you make absolutely sure that it is revenue neutral, enough of the public could go along to give political cover to get it passed.

Global warming alone is unlikely to ever be enough to get Americans to go along with having gas permenantly above $3 a gallon.
