Part of the problem is that they didn't even go that far in the past. With that as a touchstone, they are going overboard now.

I don't get what you mean. Who doesn't learn about slavery and the injustices brought upon Native-Americans?

We spent so little time on those things... I remember learning about the Trail of Tears and I didn't really come away thinking of it as much more than an isolated incident. And as far as slavery goes, we spent a bit of time on it, and we learned about the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, but not much else. A seriously whitewashed version of American history is taught in public schools.


And if you went to school in a northern state, the North was as pure as the driven snow and the South was all bad.
