Is that an attempt to back down on your implication that religion promotes immorality?

And really, that's pretty much what we find."

I don't think you got that right. I see giant halls/churches filled with people on Sundays. Some of them are televised and the others are probably hoping to be. They are in the rich affluent urban areas of America. I would say that is an example of religion thriving. This can be reduced to religiosity alone, I suppose. People go under a variety of motivations... to test their skepticism, to belong to a community, to nurture their faith etc.

The foxhole thing is different. It has more to do with faith alone. Faith in something greater, perfect in justice and unlimited in grace and goodness, that extends beyond one's own temporal life. Even people who've never been imbued with a particular religion are capable of this and inclined toward such a belief when material reality comes into question. Sages from all walks of life suggest people meditate on the realities of their mortality, even to imagine death to be imminent...or to imagine some other form of ultimate test. They say you will live life to the fullest and be at your best when considering how to use your time in such a sober and serious manner.
