RENTON, Wash. -- A five-alarm fire is burning at an apartment building in the Renton Highlands area.

Skyway Fire spokesman David Nelson said reports of an explosion at the five-story structure in the 900 block of Harrington Avenue Northeast preceded the flames. Fire investigators believe it was likely sparked by construction chemicals.

The building was a new construction that was about 70 percent completed, and was not occupied when flames broke out, Nelson said.

Thick plumes of black smoke rising above the building were seen from miles away. Multiple agencies responded to the blaze and began protecting nearby structures and evacuating homes. The flames did not spread to any other structures, fire officials said.

At 9:30 p.m., firefighters said they were battling the flames defensively as the building was collapsing on itself.
It is not known what sparked the blaze, but fire officials said the investigation likely will not start until Wednesday since the remaining structure was clearly unsound.
There were no reports of injuries.

Firefighters from Eastside Fire and Rescue, Bellevue, Kirkland, Tukwila, Burien, Skyway and Kent were aiding.
Update to follow.

To give a little perspective, this was earlier probably just after 8 PTD..
