Addi,

I have great respect for your opinions, agree with most of them, but sometimes think that your understanding is not always completely accurate.

IMHO Java Workshop 2.0 & Java Studio 1.0 are great products. These are SunSoft Products. SunSoft is committed to 100% Pure Java & is committed to garner considerable market share for Java Development tools. There are a number of very positive reviews of both just hitting the press. Java Studio was launched yesterday.

Sun has a strong belief in level playing fields. Therefore Javasoft, a seperate OPCO, treats SunSoft, Borland, Symantec etc equally. This is sometimes galling for SunSoft. JavaSoft can adopt the attitude you suggest.

SunSoft promotes Solaris on Intel & on SPARC. This is sometimes galling for SMCC. There are disadvantages to this approach, however there are also some great advantages, particularly when Sun's honest approach is contrasted with Microsoft's approach.

Look at what MS have done in the past to Ashton Tate, Borland, 3Com, Lotus, Netscape & others.

Look at what they are doing now to try & fragment Java. See the Nicholas Petreley column in nc world.

Therefore I cannot agree with your para 1, quoted below, but generally have great respect for your opinions.

(1. MSFT continues to have the best development environment tools in the market. By best I do not mean to imply that they are of the highest quality or usability for that matter, but from what is out there currently in the market MSFT's stuff is the best (at least as far as usability is concerned). SunSoft is basically going to leave that to Microsoft to spend the money and time to develop the Java development tools. They (that is SunSoft) will provide the raw technology for Microsoft (and others) to build development products from.)

It was my feeling that Sun would have a weak Q1 and therefore I think it was inappropriate to be buying in the high 40's, though in the medium term, 9 months ?, high 40's will be seen as cheap. It is equally my feeling that Sun will have a strong year. I recently bought another 100 shares at $38.

All IMHO. Not to be taken as investment advice. My opinion, not my employers'.

Cheers - Peter Green
