Very enlightening.

People say vitamins are not proven in the taking. This is largely because the need slowish but complete small intestine uptake, solubility, and the accompanying phytochemicals, fibre and minerals to activate and be effective. They figure now that vitamins E is actually about 9 forms of tocotrienols, selenoids, tocopherols, and vitamin C may combine with up to 4000 bioflavonoid phenols to do its work. Small wonder you cannot easily get the benefit in a bottle. I always advocate taking the vitamins and a bit of the food that contains it.

And multis are awash in toxic vitamin defeating analogs. If you don't balance the vitamins they may work against you. a fair number of vitamins are obviously absorbed if you take enough of them. C, B12 and Folic. But you may need to take 2000 IU's of folic and B12 to see good effect. Do the people in the studies do this? And not deplete with coffee and alcohol.? Do they increase their zinc in order to activate the B's. You can go overboard on zinc too. It is all a balance, knife-edge at times. Everything in nature has limiting processes. A tan reduces the amount of sun induced D3 so you cannot overdose on sunshine.

You would not want a perceived deficiency of this:

A deficiency of thiamine can cause weakness, fatigue, psychosis, and nerve damage. Thiamine deficiency in the United States is most often seen in those who abuse alcohol (alcoholism). A lot of alcohol makes it hard for the body to absorb thiamine from foods. Unless those with alcoholism receive higher-than-normal amounts of thiamine to make up for the difference, the body will not get enough of the substance. This can lead to a disease called beriberi.
