You can get cheap, small GPS devices that act like a beacon and send out SMS messages containing their current location. I don't think this is possible on the iPhone (without jailbreaking it) because it requires the ability to run in the background.

The iPhone *can* do it, but we're not *allowed* to do it.

You can set the interval to be what you want so it won't drain the battery. But, you are right, it can't run in the background nor can any other third party apps on the iphone. Until Apple allows this there won't be a third party app for that.

An application that uses Push might do what you want. Your Mac might poll by sending out a Push asking for location, and get the iPhone to send back its GPS coordinates.

Need to know if a stopped application can respond to a Push. If not, maybe the iPhone system can.
