IMO, the larger problem is that too often the populace in general and the right wing in particular doesn't even understand what democracy really is. The right wing too often thinks it has something to do with big government. And they are always mixing up political systems and social systems. The best democracies are those that have a highly educated populace who can understand the concepts behind real freedom, like freedom of the press, speech and voting. It is important to note though, that our founding fathers, were the intelligencia of the day. They had studied the great thinkers that went before them regarding Republics/democracies. The consitution was an intellectual exercise best understood by Jefferson and Franklin, IMO.
