Here's an article from the Asian Times on Obama's visit to Russia. The writer is one I tend to be very mixed about, but he knows his stuff, and i find this especially interesting. Something Obama said, and harkens to the piece about him/lincoln/gay rights in terms of 'what is really saying', is hopeful to me... he mentioned Putin having a foot in the present and one in the cold war. There are russians still with both feet there. and the same is true here and true of all too many people advising on the subject... but perhaps Obama was signaling that he realizes the same is true here, and therefore would filter advice given with that in mind.

this para from the article struck me

A play on words? Not exactly. Meanwhile, American analysts have their own litany of complaints about Russia - "this renewed sense of [Russian] pride" and the ensuing "arrogance, cockiness, assertiveness, self-confidence and even aggressiveness that is combined at the same time with paranoia, insecurity and hyper-sensitivity," according to David Kramer, a senior US official in the State Department for more than eight years.

for one thing... cockiness, arrogance? that's rather kettle and pot time especially in light of the 8 bush years.

about the writer -
Ambassador M K Bhadrakumar was a career diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service. His assignments included the Soviet Union, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Germany, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kuwait and Turkey.
