There are no clever computers, only clever hardware and software designers. There are no chess-playing computers, there are chess-playing programs. To write a computer program with the capability of writing computer programs for as yet undefined tasks - now that will require some extremely clever people, ludicrously clever, in fact. Such people are very thin on the ground.

Somehow I'm reminded of the expectations that Baird had for his invention of TV. He believed it would lead to a universally high level of knowledge. He couldn't have imagined Michael Jackson.
