You Just can't sell current video products. Are cunsumers waiting to buy?????????????????//twice.virtualmarketing.com Video Shipments Off In September - -October 27, 1997 Video hardware marketers closed out an otherwise healthy third quarter with a downbeat sales-to-dealers performance in September, with projection TVs being the only exception to the month's general decline in shipments and sluggish annualized selling rates, according to figures released by CEMA. Dealers bought 2.5 million direct-view color TVs during the months, down 5.4% from last year. However the third-quarter sales total of 5.88 million was off just 0.7%, and the nine-month cumulative sales total of 14.9 million was down by only 2.5%. Based on traditional selling patterns, the seasonally adjusted annualized direct-view color selling rate in September was a sub-par 20.4 million, off sharply from August's 23.2 million. The third-quarter sales rate was 21.9 million, which helped lift the nine-month rate to 21.6 million. While September sales of TV/VCRs hit a 1997 monthly high 251,400, that was off a sharp 20.5% from last year's all-time monthly record of 316,100. Third-quarter sales were up 3.7% to a record 641,700, and the nine-month total of 1.65 million was up 10.5%. The September TV/VCR selling rate was a depressed, and five-year low, 1.88 million, down almost a full million from August. The rate for the quarter was a more normal 2.4 million, just short of the 2.5 million rate for the full nine months. Projection TV sales again ran counter to trend and posted a 10% increase to 134,700, setting a new high for any month in history. The quarter's sales were up a strong 19.9% to a record 283,000 and left the nine-month total at 619,100, up 7.7%. Projection's indicated September annualized selling rate was a solid 1.02 million. That was up slightly from August's 991,000 and bettered the nine-month rate of 966,000, but was below the third-quarter rate of 1.05 million. VCR deck sales fell just short of last year's September total, coming in at 1.98 million, down 2.3%. That was only the second such monthly decline this year. Third-quarter sales were up 10.9% to a record 4.84 million, and the nine-month total of 11.9 million was up 10.2%. The VCR deck selling rate in September was 15.6 million, exactly matching the sales total for 1996. But that was way below the 18.5 million rate of August and trailed the respective 17.4 million and 17.3 million rates for the third-quarter and nine-month periods. Camcorders joined in the month's general slump with a 9.7% sales decline to 424,400, which left the third quarter at 950,400, up a scant 1.3%. Through nine months camcorder sales stood at 2.65 million, up 3.6%. The September selling rate of 3.5 million matched that of the quarter, but was off from August's 4 million. The nine-month rate was 3.8 million. In the video disc player arena, DVD sales totaled 34,300 for the month, 87,800 for the quarter and 212,800 for the nine months. Sales of laserdisc players (excluding LD/DVD combos) dropped 77% to 4,300 for the month, were down 78% too 9,500 for the quarter, and at 38,100, were down 68.1% for nine months. Based on historic sales totals for laserdisc and DVD, cumulative sales of optical video disc players have now topped the 2 million mark.
