Frank, the Bakken play is good news for the US. Coincidentally it runs right into Canada, principally in Saskatchewan.

For the US, the Bakken play and recent surge in recoverable deposits of natural gas represent a stay of execution in the long-discussed energy transformation required. As I'm sure your readers are aware, NG is a quick, comparatively green alternative for power generation. It can make incremental gains in other areas too.

Economically viable sources of domestic crude will lower the US trade deficit. Given the fragile state of the US economy, any gains are reason for celebration.

As to whether the US can meet future energy demands in the face of currently intersecting trends... well, that remains to be seen. Far better to have begun when we started this dialogue; now predicted tight capital markets are here, locally and globally. Long-anticipated economic events have eased in severity, though aftershocks continue. The devastated landscape has permanently changed, even as altered tectonics resume invisible movement. Can the US rely on "market forces" alone to dictate future solutions?

Jim

HT to Cal Gary on the Canadian Oil & Gas thread...

North Dakota could have a huge new oil field

This is Three Forks, not Bakken.
