I watched a series on the revolution last night. So the next time a right winger claims Lincoln as there own, here is the truth. Teh democratic party was the pro slavery then. So Lincoln started the Republican party to stop the spread of slavery. Buchanan allowed the spread of slavery and it infuriated Lincoln. Anyone really think the pro slavery people were the liberals and the abolistionists the conservatives. Hardly. As the war progressed, Lincoln increasingly became more and more liberal and more and more an abolitionist.
