Palin reminds me of a few characters I knew in the foreign service who achieved a certain rank and title and thought it made them untouchable demigods, before whom all others must cower and obey. Those types inevitable lacked the intelligence and character to play the game and compete at the highest levels. But thanks to institutional quirks, their careers dragged on and on until sheer time forced them out. The Peter Principle and then some.

You'd think the conservatives could find a smarter, stronger cartoon character to carry their banner, one less prone to sudden implosions than the Spectre.

I visited my business insurance agent the day Ken Starr's report was released online. The entire office staff was preoccupied with reading it, and work came to a standstill. It was conveniently indexed so you could get right to the dirty parts.

I read later that the USA suffered billions of dollars in lost productivity that day. ;)
