No. <Remember the Iranian takeover of the Great Mosque of Mecca in 1979? The Saudis do. > But Bing does: middleeast.about.com

It looks a bit like Guy Fawkes and co plotting to bomb parliament in London. He and his Catholic co-conspirators were out to murder the Protestant parliament.

But that article doesn't suggest it was an Iranian effort at all though Komeini apparently thought it a jolly good show.

I suppose Iran and Saudi Arabia are geographically close but like India and Pakistan, Germany and France, North and South Korea, etc, that doesn't mean they are an ant global super colony. Like most ants living next door, they are viciously geographically aggressive.

It does seem that as the USA/UN winds down in Iraq and transfers to Afghanistan, they might as well go via Iran and help supervise more controlled elections and ensure that the weapons of mass destruction being developed in Iran are disposed of.

Unlike in Iraq, which seemed unlikely to have WMDs to any significance, and only a few chemical weapons if that, Iran not only has the ability and the intention to build nukes, but is well under way to doing so and has expressed intentions to obliterate Israel, and to pursue Islamic Jihad with a vengeance.

There is also a large opposition in Iran to the MAD mullahs, so it's not as though there would be nobody to give political power. Even if the current bosses won in a newly constituted democratic process, it wouldn't matter really. Just remove their atomic bomb projects on the way through to Aghanistan.

Obama said he'd shake the hand of such people if they unclenched their fists. They are not unclenching, so his response will be interesting. I would not bet much at all that he is an appeasement-only politician. I bet the opposite. He has certainly not been reticent in upping the ante in Afghanistan and sends Predators over Pakistan and kills Osama's mates any chance he gets.
